The United Nations, as the only global institution mandated to address economic and
social challenges where developing countries have an equal say, is the space to call for a systemic transformation of the global financial architecture. This is where the UN Financing for Development (FfD) process comes in – as a space to advance on the systemic changes we urgently need to see.

Participation at the 2024 Global People's Assembly

The CS FfD Mechanism is pleased to report that participation in this year's Global People's Assembly (GPA) was a success. It provided an important opportunity to engage with a diverse array of organizations, strengthening alliances and amplifying shared objectives.

The Global People's Assembly 2024 took place from Sunday, September 22 to Tuesday, September 24, 2024. This year, the Assembly was held in person at the UN Church Centre in New York, with online participation available on the first day. The Global People's Assembly represented the culmination of constituency, national, and regional People's Assemblies, where representatives of marginalized and excluded communities, along with civil society, came together to discuss critical issues of global justice.

Chenai Mukumba, Executive Director of Tax Justice Network Africa represented the CS FfD Mechanism during the Opening Session on Sunday, September 22, while the well-attended FfD4 Session took place on Monday, September 23.

The session was structured as follows:

  • Moderation: Stefano Prato, SID/Facilitation Team provided a brief introductory address.

  • Introduction to FfD Process: Bodo Ellmers from Global Policy Forum outlined the process and schedule.

  • The Tension Between FfD4 and SOFT & the Way Forward: Emilia Reyes from Equidad de Género discussed this key issue.

  • Key Demands for FfD4: Rodolfo Bejarano from Latindadd, Iolanda Fresnillo from Eurodad, and Vitalice Meja from ROA-Africa focused on key demands with an emphasis on the three conventions, highlighting the CS FfD Mechanism’s asks.

  • Concluding Remarks on Systemic Issues: Bhumika Muchhala from Third World Network emphasized the need to democratize global economic governance.

After the main segment, there were two interventions from the Stakeholder Group on Persons with Disabilities(SGPwD), represented by Mohammed Loutfy of G3ict and Pamela Molina of the World Federation of the Deaf. These contributions highlighted the importance of ensuring accessibility throughout the preparatory process and overall conference.

Rodolfo Bejarano, Vitalice Meja, and Emilia Reyes then represented the CS FfD Mechanism during the closing day of the GPA on September 24. Key takeaways from these discussions will be shared shortly.

The CS FfD Mechanism extends sincere thanks to all those who contributed on its behalf and invites participants to share any additional information, comments, or perspectives.
