The United Nations, as the only global institution mandated to address economic and
social challenges where developing countries have an equal say, is the space to call for a systemic transformation of the global financial architecture. This is where the UN Financing for Development (FfD) process comes in – as a space to advance on the systemic changes we urgently need to see.

Key Civil Society Side Events During Historic UN Tax Convention Negotiations August 2025

image

From August 4 to 15, the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) for the proposed United Nations Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation—commonly referred to as the UN Tax Convention—will hold its first and second sessions of negotiations in a pivotal step toward global tax reform.

In this historic context, civil society is organizing two crucial side events to present their perspectives, proposals, and priorities. These events offer an essential platform for public engagement and transparency as nations begin formal negotiations on international tax cooperation under the UN system.

Event Dates:

  • Tuesday, August 5. 1:15- 2:45pm NY time. What should the UN Tax Convention deliver? Civil society views on the upcoming negotiations.

  • Tuesday, August 12. 1:15 - 2:45pm NY time. Stocktaking - UN Tax Convention negotiations. Civil society views on state of play and next steps

Watch Live:

All sessions and side events will be streamed live via UN Web TV.

  • Watch Aug 12 Side Event here: https://webtv.un.org/en/asset/k1p/k1pklxjic9

Why This Matters:

This is a landmark moment for global tax justice. For the first time, governments are negotiating within an inclusive and transparent UN forum, and civil society is playing an active role in shaping the agenda. These side events will spotlight key civil society proposals aimed at making the global tax system fairer, more transparent, and responsive to the needs of developing countries.
